Why You Probably Can’t Update Your Phone

Mobile phone manufacturers must make Android devices compatible with their hardware by writing drives specifically for Androids. The manufacturers need to maintain updates since there are often considered as closed sources. Google by themselves cannot simply release new versions of Android that will be compatible with all devices, therefore manufacturers need to update their drivers so that they can work with the latest versions of Android phones.

Apple has the power to overrule phone carriers and launch the latest versions of an operating system, while Android manufacturers can delay updates for some time on their networks.

There are increased hardware requirements for some new versions of Android which prevents them from working on user devices. This is also true for Windows, iPhone whereby support for older operating systems or devices are reduced or eliminated completely.

OEM’s for Androids often include their own skins and tweaks in addition to the Android operating system. These include Motorola, Samsung and HTC’s. They also remove some features and add others. This helps to differentiate their products, even though some diehard Android enthusiasts might disagree.

These carriers and OEM services are not usually interested in improving devices once they are released. There’s no incentive to put a lot of work into a legacy or older model due to the large amount of models that are being released and replacing the older ones.
